Ol' One Arm in Reno

22 July 2003

I hit the ground with the echo of snapping bones ringing in my ears. It turned out that I had hit the edge of the asphalt with enough force to shatter my upper arm (the humerus) into five or six pieces... so I've had a CAT scan and I'm waiting to hear if I am going to need reconstructive surgery. It has been one horrible week. I was already struggling like a fish without water, juggling everything I could, and this was the worst of the worst as far as timing goes. It made me really aware of the fragile nature of being human. I need to get the revenues flowing... more revenues than before, because this is going to be the most costly of my errors. There are medical bills coming, and more. Oh well, I guess that's the breaks...pun intended! One more thing before I move on to Reno events... I was amazed by the volume of e-mails wishing me a speedy recovery, thanks everyone!

Several festivities were going on throughout downtown Saturday, with "Party Gras," a New Orleans-style celebration held on Virginia Street, along with a Basque festival held at Wingfield Park. Friday night we were over visiting my son and his girlfriend and we got to see the fireworks over downtown Reno... it was a spectacular display and it brightened my darkened attitude at the time. Heck, someone is always having fun around Reno, it would be hard to not have fun!

Boomtown Hotel and Casino will twist the night away with a Sizzlin' Summer Nights Sock Hop Saturday, August 9. The dance will fill Boomtown's 7,200 square foot Sierra Ballroom with cool '50s and '60s decorations. Sock hop fun heats up when the Steppin' Stonz take the stage at 8 p.m. The popular group will transport dancers back in time with favorite '50s and '60s hits as the dance floor fills with poodle skirts and bobby socks. Tickets are just $5 per person and can be purchased at Boomtown's General Store Gift Shop or by calling (775) 345-6000, ext. 6993. The sock hop is for those 21 and over. A classic car show area will also fill part of Boomtown's west parking area with classic Chevys, Corvettes, Mustangs and more. Get out those poodle skirts and bobby socks.

Two of pop music's most interesting artists bring a night of music to Reno on Thursday, July 31 as Meat Loaf & Cyndi Lauper take the stage at 7 p.m. at the City Center Pavilion. This musical performance is the latest in a long line-up of entertainment brought to the city by Circus Circus Reno, Eldorado Hotel Casino, Harrah's Reno Casino and Hotel, and Silver Legacy Resort Casino. I want to go to this one, having worn out a Meatloaf tape or two in past.

Atlantis Casino Resort was a lucky place to be this past weekend. On Friday and Saturday Atlantis gave away a total of $110,000 during the 12th Anniversary grand giveaway weekend. Plus another fortunate lady took home $50,000 from a Radical Royal slot machine on Sunday night. Pete Almeida of Reno took home the anniversary grand prize of $45,200 Saturday night after his name was pulled from the large barrel of potential winners. This is Almeida's first big win.

"I have no idea what I am going to do with this money," Almeida said. "I still can't believe I won this much."

While Almeida's name was called, his wife was Alberta was off playing elsewhere in the casino.

"I looked up and saw the (Paradise) club number and thought it looked familiar," Mrs. Almeida said. "Then I looked again and saw Pete's name. I can hardly believe this. It is our first big win."

Sunday night brought Atlantis' second big weekend winner. Kathy Craig of Westwood, Calif. hit $50,000 on a $1 Radical Royal slot machine after playing for about 10 minutes.

"I thought I just hit a flush," Craig said. "I came for the anniversary party and am glad I did. Now I can buy the new car I have wanted. Atlantis is our home away from home."

Well, I'm keeping this a little shorter this time due to the one-armed thing... so I hope you all are thinking of coming to Reno to gamble and have a whole lot of fun. There's still a bunch of fun things coming up... hope to see you here!!!
