Playing Tic Tac Toe with a Chicken in Reno

4 August 2003

Okay, I admit it, I've been trying daily to beat a chicken playing Tic Tac Toe... it doesn't seem that it should be hard to do, beat a bird with a pea brain at a game like that... but the chicken has beat me... Some people have beat the bird, and they got $500 for the win. It's all over at Gold Dust West where the August promotion has brought the chicken "Goldie" to Reno... same game that was in Vegas and Atlantic City... but by far the funniest promotion I've seen in Reno. More cluck for your buck now, and Gold Rush cardholders can play daily for free... even if you don't beat the chicken, you still get an egg filled with a coupon for things like 3x points, American flags, 500 bonus points... nobody loses. The plasma screen out front has had some of the funniest advertising going on...with someone in a chicken suit... credit is due for having Reno's funniest promotion... oh... and another reason to get a Gold Rush card and use it? The half off coupons that come in the mail for the Wildwood Restaurant are excuse enough. It's so worth it to take a moment... get a card, and use it.

Biggest Country Fried Steak in Nevada awarded to Boomtown.... I had to go check out the one-pound country fried steak offered at Boomtown's Drover's Restaurant... that's the truck stop restaurant (and casino) and let me tell you it is huge and really awesome and well worth the price. It covered the whole platter, came with soup or salad, choice of potato, a vegetable, and a roll...smothered with country gravy, and a one-armed lady could cut it with her fork. These big boys are $8.99...use your Boomtown player's club card and save a buck. I enjoy Drover's... the casino is small, seems to pay well, and the food is big... a nice break from the bigger Boomtown... but you have to see those steaks! I took more than half of mine home.

Silver Legacy announced that a California woman won a $988,316 Wheel of Fortune jackpot at the resort casino yesterday evening. This is the second huge Wheel of Fortune jackpot won at Silver Legacy in the past month, after a Sacramento woman won $885,257 just 18 days earlier. I wonder if it goes in threes?

Well, this is the week for tons of fun in Reno and Sparks... HOT AUGUST NIGHTS is finally here. The most popular event in the area... the majority of the event runs from the 7-10th, as thousands of classic cars and people pack the area and the atmosphere is an immersion into the fifties and sixties. Reservations are scarcer than hen's teeth... but if you are lucky enough to be here... you are in for a treat. I'm going to go hang out at Duke's Casino on Victorian Square in Sparks for the event...which is a really great place to soak in the atmosphere and scope out the cars...plus there will be all kinds of free entertainment on multiple outdoor stages in both Reno and Sparks, as well as cruises on Victorian Square and down South Virginia Street.

Harrah's Reno will be turning up the heat during this year's Hot August Nights with a sizzling line-up of live entertainment on the Plaza. You can keep your saddle shoes tapping when Johnny Rivers hits the stage Friday, August 8 at 10:45 p.m. The fun continues Saturday, August 9 when soulful crooner Juice Newton takes the stage at 8 p.m. Additional FREE live entertainment will keep your poodle skirts swirlin' throughout the week as you enjoy performances by Connie & The Corvettes, The Dynatones, and The Riptides. Plus, Ronnie & The Classics will keep the Plaza at Harrah's Reno rockin' on Tuesday, August 5 when you attend their sizzling summer "Block Party." For more information call 1-800-HARRAHS (427-7247) or call the Box Office directly at 775-788-2900.

Reno is a great place to grab some great eats, take in some visual treats, and accomplish some great gambling feats. It's worth taking a trip to check out the great games. I hope to hear from each and every one of Reno's visitors. Let me know how your visit was!
