Refreshingly Cool in Tahoe

6 July 2001

If you hadn't heard... while Las Vegas was literally broiling under 120 degree heat just a few days ago... thundershower activity in the Sierra's cooled Lake Tahoe down to a reasonable 68 degrees... small difference, one would have to agree.... The biggest problem with thundershowers is the obvious fire danger... and several lightning strikes did ignite in the hills above both Reno and the Carson Valley, just behind historic Genoa. Luckily, firefighters gained a quick handle on both of those fires. Fire danger is extremely high this year, and the area is seeing conditions usually not seen until late August and September.

Beginning today (Friday) more than 70 of the top names in sports and entertainment are expected for the 12th annual American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, July 7-9 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. The 54-hole stroke play tournament features a $500,000 purse with the winner pocketing $100,000. The event is sponsored by American Century Investments, a premier investment manager serving two million individual and institutional investors.

NBC Sports will televise live the second and final rounds of the tournament on Saturday, July 7 (1:00-3:00 p.m. PT) and on Sunday, July 8 (Noon-3: 00 p.m. PT).

Caesars Tahoe is the host hotel for the event... and the activity level around their casino has been high, to say the least. I always have fun getting the progressive jackpots for the Tahoe Gaming Guide during this time of year... never knowing who I might glimpse on the casino floor....

Harrah's Lake Tahoe has opened its new "Ice Creamery" and a new gift shop to rave reviews... and the new "Ice Creamery" features those pretty eye-catching tiled mountain scenes... The gambling is great at Harrah's... they have all sorts of new slots to look at and to try, and by the end of this month, will also be reigning over at Harveys, too... as the purchase should be completed by that time.... speaking of Harveys... they too have all kinds of new slots offered on the casino floor... and some pretty great progressive slot jackpots waiting... check out "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and "My Rich Uncle" at Harveys...

Lake Tahoe, for those that don't know, straddles the state line through Nevada and California. While the casinos like Harrah's, Harveys, and Caesars Tahoe are located in Stateline, Nevada... on the South side of the lake, there are several smaller casinos on the Nevada side on the North side of the lake. In Incline Village, there is a Hyatt all recently remodeled to perfection, and in Crystal Bay, you can find the Tahoe Biltmore, the Crystal Bay Club, and the Cal-Neva.... famous for once being owned by Frank Sinatra, and hosting such guests as Marilyn Monroe... The gaming is fun over there too... and I would hate to forget to include my friends from the North!

I couldn't believe my eyes... and had to scrub them twice... upcoming on July 18 and 19 to Caesars Tahoe is Black Oak Arkansas with "Jim Dandy"... A band I remember sneaking into the famed "Whiskey A-Go-Go" in Hollywood to see, at the age of 17... Wow.... considering that was only a mere 30 years ago.... I guess I will have to make the folks at Caesars a little nuts and resolve to creative begging.... gotta see this one!

Well, there goes the fax machine, it appears that the Flamingo Reno recently paid a "Blondie" jackpot of $28,201 to June Ayake Lindsay of Petaluma, California ... she had just placed five coins in a Blondie Meal Ticket slot when she reeled up three bonus Blondie symbols and hit the big ticket payout!

Featuring scenes from the popular comic strip, the nickel five-coin Blondie machines are part of a statewide rapid-hit progressive. Three versions of Blondie machines, including Meal Ticket, Dagwood's Big Dough, and Blondie's Big Spender are featured in the Flamingo's Virginia street casino.

Looks like I will have to add June to the Flamingo Reno's winner's page on the www.RenoGamingGuide.com ... as the Flamingo is really great at sending photos of winners to me... sorry Tahoe... Flamingo Reno wins hands down for getting the info out quickly....

Beat the heat.... visit and gamble Lake Tahoe!
